The Autobiography of George Müller

I had heard of a man who had 55,000 prayers answered years ago. Heard about it again. Decided to read about him. This book is amazing. I just got it yesterday and I’m halfway through it. Public prayer will never make up for closet communion.

Over the years I've read a couple of other versions of Müller's autobiography/biography, and recently I decided to check his story out again. I found I'd given away my other versions, so bought a Kindle one, which turned out to be neither of the ones I'd read previously, as far as I can tell, though much of the information was the same, of course. Müller was meticulous in keeping accounts, and could tell you down to the last farthing how much had been given to him, or his orphans/orphanages, his schools, the missionaries he supported, his tract and Bible distribution. All this on top of running three large orphanages, praying every day for their needs, answering letters and far more. But these things are only the outcome of an extraordinary faith (although he regarded his faith as ordinary) and a willingness to allow God to supply all his needs. He never once asked anyone for anything in the way of donations, though he did let people know about the work and how it was going. More importantly he let people know about God's constant supply, not just of money but of the right people, food and much more. Müller was by no means the first to live by faith in such a way. Reading about Muller’s life encourages my faith and gives me the desire to get to know God better and the boldness to rely on Him more faithfully- without having to rely on myself. Book is in diary format (day, things he did and thought). I’m halfway through it but wanted to share that this is a great book- good for gifts and for self reflection.

I loved reading the repetitive answers to prayers and the author's commentary. It is easy and tempting to skip some of the repetitive updates to the financial accounts of the ministry, however. It's important that these details are there just like it's important that genealogies are present in the Bible. They make for great reference material if needed.

How he lived his life is inspiring to me. This was an important book for me to read, reflect on, and pray on. The writing is not the strength of the book, it is the reporting of how he lived that unlocked thoughts, discoveries and applications for me in my life.

I'm not one who reviews books often, yet I cannot help but speak a word of value to be found and encouragement contained within this recounting of the life of George Muller. If you believe in Christ as Lord, then I cannot more highly recommend this book to encourage your faith in His leading of your own life today, as exhibited and humbly told by George in the seemingly uncountable and miraculous meeting of man and God in faith and truth in his own life. I would find it impossible for you to not grow deeply as you yield to the work of the Holy Spirit as you ponder and encounter God with George in these pages and within your own heart. May you walk ever more boldly for having given yourself over to this word of testimony and find overcoming entering into your own life through the humble and joyful telling of how God treated George so mercifully and faithfully and so far exceeding all of his expectations along the way.

This autobiography is a real life example of how we can see miracles every day when we pray with pure motives for the blessing of others. James 4:1-4 makes it clear that the key to seeing God answer pray is asking Him with pure motives. Jesus, who said He was the Son of God, eternal King, came to save us by suffering and dying to save the human race from their sin. He had the power to heal the blind , the crippled and the sick people. He raised people from the dead. With all this power he still set an example by washing His disciples feet. He didn’t come to condemn the world but to save us. While He was here he loved and served people. If you love like Jesus, and serve like Jesus and your prayers will result in miracles like Jesus. Excellent book. We have bought many copies of these, and we give them as gifts to friends interested in missions. Calling it an inspiring story would be an understatement! Every Christian pursuing missions should have this in their library.
